[9580 * Mediterranean Taxus baccata woods]
These woods are tree formations, dominated by the Common Yew (Taxus baccata), usually subordinated to other species or existing in topographically favoured environments, such as encased valleys near small watercourses, which occur inside deciduos woods. Although its distribution throughout the Iberian Peninsula, it is quite rare to find the habitat in the strict sense, that is, rather dense formations where the Yew is the dominant species. In general, it forms small nucleous inside woods dominated by other species, thus contributing for the forest mosaic diversity. Yew formations are not very well studied, but is it thought that formations dominated by Taxus baccata should include, to a larger or lesser extent, several arboreous elements, common to neighbouring oak and birch woods, namely Quercus robur, Q. pyrenaica, Betula celtiberica, Ilex aquifolium, Pyrus cordata, Genista florida and Sorbus aucuparia. On the SCI Peneda-Gerês, 11 000 Yew specimens were identified, integrated in the habitat *9580, comprising an area of 180 ha, grouped in four large nucleous, scattered throughout 127 distinct locations. On the SCI Serra da Estrela, 457 Yew specimens were identified in 10 distinct locations, integrated in the habitat, comprising an area of 10 ha, prior to the 2005 forest fire, which destroyed part of the greatest nucleous in Barroca do Teixo. Although the presence of invasive species is rather worrying, in special those of Acacia dealbata e A. melanoxylon, the habitat in SCI Peneda-Gerês is slowly expanding, whereas in SCI Serra da Estrela the species is regressing and is strongly threatened by forest fires.
